We turn our attention to Dwelling in God
Greetings Friends and families of East Geelong UC,
Peace be with you.
I pray this day finds you well,
staying warm and finding joy in the quiet moments gifted to us in this season.
As we look towards Sunday (25th July 2021) here is an offering to prompt your thinking of scripture for this week. So come, let us turn our attention to dwelling in God.
Our dwelling place today is found in the Letter from Paul written to the people of Ephesus.
Ephesians is addressed to a group of believers rich beyond measure in Jesus Christ, but who continued to live as beggars. Why did they remain in spiritual poverty? Because they remained ignorant of their true wealth.
No Christian has to live like a spiritual beggar when God offers spiritual blessings beyond all imagination. To move from poverty to prosperity, however, believers must first read and meditate on what God’s Word says about their true standing.
A gentle reminder that our time is for dwelling in God through hearing more of God’s stories. Leaving room for God to speak to us in our reflections, and preparing to meet God as we meet with one another.
As we begin, A song of readiness to focus our senses and still our hearts and minds.
A Prayer for the day…
Holy One, Holy Three.
In this moment we seek you.
Through all of the uncertainty we know you are with us.
Open our eyes this day to see you
revealed to us again in your words.
Open our minds to new understanding
and our hearts in love for you even more
As we dwell in you alone
Our strength and our Foundation.
Through the name of the Christ who redeems and saves. Amen.
The Scripture for the day is Ephesians 3: 14-21,
from RCL Ordinary 17 for July 25th, 2021.
As you read below, either on a piece of paper or in your Bible – it is okay to mark your bibles as it helps you to retain your lifelong journey of understanding…
- note the words or phrases that stand out to you with a !
- Note the questions or confusion you have with ?
- Note the important things like names of people and places with *
- Write a sentence for yourself summing up what you hear God saying to you in these words
**If you have any “Bible Study” questions, note those on your paper so you can attend to them at another point, and return to your dwelling place.
Prayers for Strengthened Love
14 For this reason[a] I kneel[b] before the Father,[c] 15 from[d] whom every family[e] in heaven and on earth is named. 16 I pray that[f] according to the wealth of his glory he will grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, 17 that Christ will dwell in your hearts through faith, so that, because you have been rooted and grounded in love, 18 you will be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,[g] 19 and thus to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you will be filled up to[h] all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him who by the power that is working within us[i] is able to do far beyond[j] all that we ask or think, 21 to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
We reflect on the Word of God…
Is Christ dwelling in my heart? Am I rooted and grounded in God’s love?
Do I feel spiritually strong right now?
Is there an area of my life right now that needs spiritual strengthening?
How do I increase my spiritual strength?
A Prayer in response
Loving God we turn to you this day…
In your prayer, express how you are feeling about the strength of your roots. If there is a vulnerability pray specifically for God to strengthen you in this place. Pray for Christ to dwell in your heart and for your life to be strengthened day by day through his presence in your life.
Pray that God would continue to strengthen you day by day.
